Product Description
This Cat 6 cable is great for wiring your Gigabit Ethernet or 100Base-T computer network. The PVC jacket bends easily and is easily removable for plug installation. Backwards compatible with Category 5 (Cat 5) and Category 5e (Cat 5e) cable, so you can mix this cable with those cables in the same network. The Cat 6 plugs are suitable for use with solid or stranded wire. The spring loaded crimp tool has cushioned plastic grips, a wire/cable cutter, and replaceable blades and crimp dies. The tester is suitable for Cat 6, Cat 5e, Cat 5, and BNC cables and has a two-piece design so that you can test installed cables. The two pieces of the tester snap together for easy transport or storage. Each half of the tester has an RJ45 and a BNC jack.B & A Computer Build Your Own Network Cable Kit: 250 Feet Grey Cat 6 Cable, 100 Cat 6 Plugs, Crimp Tool, & Cable Tester Review
The cable is really the best part of the kit. The cable is of good quality and so far has fit my needs without any problems. The tester is the other good part of the kit. Once you put in a 9-volt battery (not included) you're all set to test your own patch cables. The crimp tool included with the kit is only partially functional. The cutter and crimper on the crimp tool work fine for crimping the cat 6 plugs. The stripper on the tool however is too deep resulting in anywhere from 1 to 4 nicked wires everytime I tried using it. The problem is the crimper appears to be for phone line cable, not network cable, evident by the packaging and also by the sizing bar on the strippers which prevents stripping more than a quarter inch or so of wire which is not ideal for prepping network wires.
The other negative part of the kit is the included plugs. The plugs are the 2-part variety that include the connector and guide bar. Unfortunately after 20 failed attempts, I was only able to get one working patch cable. The seller was somewhat helpful, but the problem is that the connectors leave way too much play at the end so at least one or two wires would always slip to the side away from the contacts when crimped. I gave up on them after going through a fifth of the connectors and instead sprung for a pack of 50 quality connectors.
All and all, even though I had to go out spend an additional $28 on different connectors (plugs) as well as another $6 on a simple cat6 stripper, I feel the price of the kit for the cable, a tester, and a somewhat functional crimper was still worth the price of the kit...even if it wasn't as good of deal as I had originally figured.
