I prefer these to the curly flourescents, they come in different colour ranges and intensities, they are best for downward facing ceiling illumination, they work for upwards facing lamps, but the lower illumination is of course limited by the plastic collar that supports the globe. I would like for some of the same to be constructed with a clear cone as that would help with lower light dispertion in an upwards facing lamp socket and would keep the bulb and its socket much much cooler.
