If you own a Toyota Tacoma with an overhead temp readout and compass you may find it stops working after a few years. This is because Toyota underrated a 12 cent resistor and it tends to overheat and come lose or drop out completely. The dealer quoted $500 to replace the entire unit. All you need is one of these thick-film resistors and a soldering iron. It took me about 10 minutes to remove the unit (needs a #10 torq or a small hex key), solder in a new resistor, and put it all back together again. Wife is happy, I'm happy. I have 24 more of these in case it fails again.

Note: The top of the resistor has the code 510 on it. That doesn't mean it's 510 ohms it means it's 51x10^0 = 51 ohms. I knew that degree in electrical engineering would come in useful one day :-)
